An important message

A recent story on the ABC news site concerns a British police campaign message to young women out for a night on the town:-

A Suffolk police safety campaign magazine shows pictures of young women slumped on the ground next to messages urging them: "If you've got it, don't flaunt it".

"If you fall over or pass out, remember your skirt or dress may ride up,"
Okay, fair enough,

"You could show off more than you intended - for all our sakes, please make sure you're wearing nice pants....."
Wait for it:

"...and that you've recently had a wax."
That's right folks. Now you no longer have to worry if you put on clean pants before you leave the house, but when did you last have that wax.

"We need to raise their awareness of potential problems," Chief Superintendent David McDonnell said.

Okay I can accept a campaign about wearing respectable under garments - people are more vunerable when drunk and some people are animals who take advantage of this, but a campaign about making sure you wax in case you fall over, seems more suited to a trashy women's magazine.

I don't know what shocks me more, that a police campaign would be so overtly sexist or it's a British police campaign.

They're not actually telling women to wax, Nat. It's tongue in cheek.

It might be in bad taste, and perhaps sexist, but the point of the campaign is to shock the readers into action.

The reason 'waxing' is mentioned is to try to embarrass the audience, and hopefully remind them that their crotch will very likely be visible if they drink enough and wear short enough skirts.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be funny.

I'm aware that it's suppose to be tongue in cheek but it doesn't alter to fact that it seems more suited to a trashy women's magazine then a police safety campaign.

And the British have a much better sense of humour then that.

Quiet frankly, we need a campaign focused on waxing, period.

(Hows that for tongue in ... cheek)

@linds:
Disgusting...and yet compellingly amusing.
:-)

@nat:
I think that's the point. It's supposed to sound like a trashy magazine to get people reading and to avoid coming off as overly didactic.

If the police said 'don't drink too much and don't wear short skirts', most people would turn off straight away. Whereas saying 'if you're going to drink and wear short skirts, do us all a favour and wax!' makes people realise that their nether regions will be more than visible and that they will very likely turn out looking very foolish.
