H2Whoooa!

John Howard believes that nuclear power is the way of the future. He fully endorses the findings of the inquiry into whether Australia should have nuclear power, which states that we could have 25 nuclear power plants by 2050. Power suppilers, such as Energy Australia, have conducted their own indepedent studies into power supply, concluding that clean coal and Nucelar are the only way forward as alternatives such as solar and wind are econmocially unviable.

An article I read last night highlighted a fact about nuclear power that I did know, but hadn't thought much about. Nuclear power plants require 80% more water than conventional (read coal) power plants. That's why Nuclear power plants are built near large bodies of water.

Howard has said that he is willing to override the States' objections to Nuclear power if he feels that it is in the nations best interest.

Then we have the water crisis. A large percentage of Australia is in drought. Whole communities have bene forced to ship in water. This raises the question should we be pushing for a power supply that will create a huge drain on our dwindling resource, however there is more to this story.

John Howard's response to the water crisis is to try to take control from the States the Murray - Darling basin, which is a main water supply of three states. He will inject $10 billion to improve the river, the money contingent on the states giving up control. Opposition to the plan promoted Howard to play the national card. He said we should think of ourselves as Australians, not as Queenslanders, Victorians and New South Welshmen. Plus, as I said the money will only be given if they give him control.

So Howard has stated he will overide States to install Nuclear power plants. Nuclear power plants require lots of water. Howard wants to take control of lots of water....

Just thinking. It's a scary thought

Hear how JH now is talking about a carbon tax? About two (at most) months from when we were never considering one.

Good news for those of us who support it.

As for water and nudirty power, well it is a point I didnt think of either. How long to the bloody election already?

So I write a piece on Howard's possible shady and underhanded attempt to force nuclear power on us and all you can do is quibble about what he calls people from New South Wales?

;-) Just kidding. Really wanted to use the word quibble. I like that word. It has an almost magical quality to it. Say it ten times in public and watch as two people in white coats magically appear to whisk you away.

If solar and wind power are not viable in Australia, with all of its vast open spaces, then I'd hate to think what it would take for them to be viable.

I wonder when the powers that be will realise that environmental responsibility might actually cost money? LOTS of money?
