Superman Returns

*WARNING DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS*
DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

Just seen Superman returns and may I say, wow!

Have never been much of a Superman fan. Don't get me wrong, I do like Superman, he's a iconic hero and all that, but I enjoy stories with great and real characters and while some Superman writers pull this off there has always been this tendancy to focus more on his super powers then on his more human aspects (I know he's an alien but he was raised by humans and not wanting to get into the whole comic book lore Kryptonians are just like humans except when they're near a yellow star)

Superman Returns manages Superman's more human aspects quite nicely. I felt his isolation and the pressure of being the world's saviour (some well done Christ symbolism) and of course his love for Lois Lane - he finds it very hard to maintain his Superman image and nearly reverts to his Clark Kent persona when he's around her.

The characters felt real, and the acting was great, especially Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. I remember thinking that he was a good choice when I first found out that he had been choosen for Lex and I was right. Reg directed me to a interview with Kevin Spacey who said that he didn't watch the orginal movies when preparing for the role so he could make Lex his own character and not try to copy Gene Hackman. While Return's Lex had a lot of Spacey's own character it was very similar to Hackman's Lex.

I enjoyed Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane. Smart, sexy and indepedent (except for when Superman's around). Brandon Routh was good as Superman/Clark Kent and looked very much like Christoper Reeve's Superman (which is good since this movie is a sequel to Superman 1&2 [the good ones - the crappy 3&4 didn't happen]) There was a good chemistry between Routh and Bosworth.

Tristan Lake Leabu as Lois's son Jason didn't shit me. I will admit I don't like kids in movies - unless the movie is about kids or they're pivitol to the story in some way. I often find kids are added for the cute effect or to tone down the movie classifiction. There were a few moments at first he appeared to be cute factor but it is later revealed he is pivitol not to the story but to the characterisation of Lois and Superman. And they didn't over do his "super powers" as I feared they would.

Over all I give it 4 stars out of five.

Inevitable

John Howard wants a "debate" on nuclear power. He believes that while the majority of the populace is against it he sees nuclear power as inevitable and thinks Australia should have it any way.

Given the rise of homosexual equal rights and the growing support it has in main stream society I think it's safe to say that gay marriages are inevitable as well. Sooner or later conservative governments will be out of power and the radicals in and then, well, it only takes one term of government and bam, gay marriages.

He's resistiance is laughable. "Society isn't ready for it." Gays want it, some straights support it. Most people don't care if gays get married. The only ones actually opposed to it are the conservative/religious right.

Marriage, as John Howard has said is a religious institution of man and woman. Religious? which religion. Christians get married, Jews get married, Musliums get married, hell even scientologists get married. Actually come to think of it even atheists get married, so long as they're man and woman.

If atheists can get married, and you don't need a holoy person any more as we have legal celebrants who need not have religious ties, then it's not a religious union. (Okay atheism is a religious stance, but not a religion.)

So marriage is now just a institution between man and woman. Hmm, smacks of discrimination there. John Howard's lastest quote "he wants to get rid of any areas of genuine discrimination against homosexuals."

Burning Question

There's been in recent years a lot of talk about burning things. A couple of years ago some church leaders wanted their followers to gather Harry Potter books and other various memorabilia because, according to them they are evil and promote witchcraft and set a torch to them. They wanted to protect the youth from such a evil influence.

Sound familar? Almost same excuse the nazi's gave when they burnt the Jewish books. They wanted to protect society from the evil influence as well.

These days people burn flags. Mostly it's in "protest" of foreign countries actions, or because the other country is the enemy. But now this action as spread. People will burn their own country's flag in protest of the governments actions, or to protest against society in general, as evidence in the Decemeber problems in Sydney.

Now there's a growing movement to make flag burning illegal. Ironically some of the people pushing this movement are the same ones who advocated or supported the burning of Harry Potter.

Why? Burn Potter because they hate him. But they love the flag and the country for which it stands and therefore anyone wanting to burn it are evil and want to destory society. In english - hate this burn it, love this how dare YOU burn it.

I'm sick of this double standard. One form of protesting is acceptable but the other is not? If such a law is passed, and given the recent patronism push by the government it is most likely it will, then everything should be included. Make it illegal to burn anything in a protest, books, films, flags, everything.

But if such a law is no passed then there should be free reign on the buring. Don't like this movie, burn it. Hate the bible, burn it (that's right, had to slip that one in. Send me your hate mail and I'll ignore it).

Burn baby burn.

A bold new world

Since my old blog server's has become unreliable with both my posting and people accessing it I have relied on the kindness of my friends, or more specifically Linds to allow me to post. But this can not go on forever so once again I have struck out on my own and here I am.

Hi once again to my regular readers, should they be able to find my new home. A lot has happened since I last posted. My computer has had a minor upgrade:- a new mother board, a new processor (2.4gz AMD 64 4000+), more ram (2gb baby) and a new video card (256mb nvidia Geforce 6800). Once again my baby is state of the art.

The bitch who lived with us moved to Sydney and stole all of our utilities, without telling us! Which violated our contract with our preivous net provider. Linds and I were the ones who are making any effort to contact her to sort it out which is really pissing me off. She could at least drop us a line and apologise instead of us chasing her. Stupid bitch!

Uni's going good, just finished my assignments for the Semester and now only have exams to wait for. Work is, well work just is!

Okay until next time, Renegade79 signing off
